Heading across the Solent, we return to the Isle of Wight for 2019. Highly requested by our guests, we are visiting Osbourne House and Ventnor Botanic Gardens for the first time. We also return to Warner Bembridge Coast, once owned by George V’s Lord in Waiting.
We travel south, taking the ferry to the Isle of Wight. Arriving mid-afternoon there is time to explore before dinner and the nights entertainment!
“It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot” said Queen Victoria of Osborne House, her palatial holiday home on the Isle of Wight. Visit Victoria and Albert’s private apartments, their bathing beach and children’s play-cottage for an intimate glimpse of royal family life. Then stroll through the garden terraces where the stunning views across the Solent reminded Prince Albert of the Bay of Naples.
Osborne reflects Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s passions, tastes and style. Ornate furnishings and artefacts from The Royal Collection fill rooms and corridors where Victoria entertained heads of state, inventors, princess and princesses and ruled the vast British Empire.
Ventnor Botanic Garden lies in the remarkable micro climate at the heart of the famous ‘Undercliff.’ This unique garden is protected from the cold northerly winds by chalk downs. The garden is unrivaled for its collections of subtropical plants grown unprotected outdoors.
The Topical House is designed to reflect the conservatories of the Victorian era, with visitors entering through a derelict mine shaft. There is also a gift shop and a cafe.
Sadly we travel home today, making a stop enroute to arrive home in the late afternoon.
